Oh bum.

Wow, couldnt have asked for a better result in Wales v England!  I certainly wasnt expecting that result, but I really couldnt be more pleased.

Then this afternoon’s match is looking like a real vintage struggle, France are fielding a wild team of all kinds of talented but potentially mismatched players… never can tell how they will play though.  And the Scottish team is looking really strong, so long as they dont fall into complacency, the lads should get this one!  If I was only slightly sadder than I am, I would live blog it….

The six nations tournament begins tomorrow, and depending upon whom you listen to, its either an open contest, or England or France have their names written all over it…

Guess what, I’m backing Scotland.

Yeah I know, I backed Scotland for the world cup and it didnt happen, but so what. Here’s the deal…

England have Wales at home on Saturday, in all honesty, much as I love Wales and the Welsh, I cant see England losing this one.  Dismal Ireland face weak Italy, hopefully the Irish can walk away with a some honour restored.

Then on Sunday the Scots square up to France, the champs.  But the French, who have six uncapped players in their squad, have been soaking up the sun while the scots have been muscling it out in all weathers, and guess what… it’ll be snowy and horrible at Murrayfiled on Sunday! Perfect!

Its not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination, but we can tough it out up there, and give the French a beating, that will put tails well and truly up for Wales in Cardiff next week.  And dont forget we’ve a good record at the Millenium stadium, which could make it two wins out of two… then the chances are we should beat both Ireland and Italy, and even if England prove too much for us, we’d have four wins, and that could well be enough to get us the championship… dreamer I may be, but let’s just wait and see what happens on Sunday shall we!

DISASTER! I AM GUTTED!

We should have had them… devastated.

phew - that was too close for my liking, I thought I would be sharing some Welsh style misery tomorrow… but we put the Azzuri in their place in the end, and next up - well France or Argentina I reckon, and that could go either way, although only if we do a lot better than we did tonight.

Come on Scotland!

As things go - that isnt a bad result for Scotland, as long as the team dont let it knock their confidence.

To come out against the world’s toughest side, with your second string team, and only conceded 40 points is pretty good if you ask me.

Yes the scrum did get shunted around the park, but actually any front row will struggle against those guys, and lest we forget, our big forwards were all being rested.  In fact  Iwouldnt put it past Hadden to have made that a tactical move, the All Blacks werent able to put the shove on as much as they liked, for fear of being penalised!

So I dont think that was the battering people were expecting, a tough game yes, a heavy loss yes, but a good move on our part.

The next time we see these guys could be the final (that’s if the AB’s find their form again) - and we’ll certainly field our full team then…. please God!

Seems people are begining to come round to my opinion.. come on Scotland!

And for all the talk - I think this must be one of the strongest ’second string’ teams around - certainly the best we’ve had available for many a year.

Yeah I know I havent blogged for about a fortnight - what can I say, the weather has been sunny, and the beach/park is better than a keyboard…

we’ve got our new gap year and training programme starting, and I had to do a couple of little things for that…

and of course the world cup is on!!

and tonight… yes my friends… tonight Scotland just battered Romania 6 converted tries to nil - come on!!

so we now face the All Blacks at the weekend, and I’m a bit torn as to whether we go out all guns blazing, and risk the injuries to try and get a result against the kiwi monsters, or we write it off, and dont risk our hand…

cos we’ve got Italy the following weekend, and we have to beat them, or at least draw - no losing thankyou very much.  Then we will face Argentina, France or Ireland… be nice if it were Ireland!  Then a hop and a skip through to the semis… all bets are off guys!

Am I really alone in thinking Scotland have a chance in the World Cup?

Well I probably am, but when the odds are 150 - 1 against Scotland winning, I feel like taking those odds!!  Lets think about it a minute, we’ve had a decent pre competition build up, battering Ireland and avoiding getting totally battered by the Springboks, so that’s a good start.

What we need to do now is get through the pool, and to do that we need to batter the little teams, beat Italy (that’s the tricky one) and ideally give the All Blacks a good kick up the backside at Murrayfield (if its going to happen anywhere, it’ll be there!)

But even if we dont beat the All Blacks, we could get through by beating Italy, and then we just need to hold our nerve…  alright it seems a bit far fetched even to me, but you never know what Scotland will pull out of the bag, France are always hard to predict, sometimes great, sometimes rubbish, we’ll pray for the latter!  Wales are on their uppers, Ireland have forgotten how to play, the English are all talk, ok so there are some pretty decent teams to contend with - the Boks, the Aussies and the All Blacks for a start, but on a good day with a following wind… (that changes direction at half time)

Scotland always seem to me to do well if they get some good points on the board early on, so I’ll be cheering for early doors tries from Sunday onwards.

Come on Scotland!!

first the Scarlets scoring yet another try on Friday night, as previously blogged here.

I went to see the Llanelli Scarlets play Borders last night, its great having top class rugby a short walk from the house!  Sadly (for me) the Scarlets gave the Borders a good thrashing, despite the hefty presence of Gavin Kerr (Berwick boy!!!) at number 1, and the very able Chris Cussiter doing the do, Borders just couldnt stand up to the strong attack, and found it difficult to penetrate the tight Llanelli defence!

I was hoping that I would be able to make some kind of point about how the way the team performed shows that the Borders shouldnt be scrapped in favour of funds going to Glasgow warriors, but sad to say I can see the point.

The fact that the Scarlets have got the cash to have so many heavyweight internationals in the team, and so comprehensively crush Borders - who aquitted themselves well despite the scoreline, goes to show that funding is really key in these matters.

I managed to snatch a picture paparazzi style of one of the scarlets tries, (there were quite a few :(  ) which I’ll post later.

I think I was the only person there shouting for Borders, which was a slight embarresment for my friends, who were all supporting Scarlets.  I did get a few odd looks, but I’m used to that!

Looking forward to Scotland playing the All Blacks in September anyone?  Another one bites the dust!

And if you really want to know the final score, go look somewhere else, I heard it enough last night.
